Undercover Karaoke with Jewel

FOD: 'Jewel, disguised as a mild mannered businesswoman, drops by a local karaoke bar and performs some of her classic songs to a completely dumbfounded audience.'

Really like this sift.

I went to a pub once with a friend of mine. He was in a band and with a few of his friends who were doing a music degree. The pub happened to have a karaoke on that night and people were getting up and singing, or at least trying to.

A couple of the girls we were with got up to sing. They were both incredible singers and both of them silenced the bar. It was incredible, really talented people. I wouldn't have been surprised to find out they were famous people in drag. Unfortunately the world doesn't work like that and there are very few breaks for these people.

I'm upvoting for the way Jewel could light up the bar without people knowing who she was. She didn't need the fame to carry her. She deserves to be where she is, she's a talent. Some of those in the spotlight really couldn't pull this off.

Regardless of whether or not you like Jewel's music, you have to admit that she's a classy musician for doing stuff like this. I love musicians who don't lose touch - they still just love to perform and make people happy with their songs.

I may have to starting listening to Jewel. Also, Nickelback sucks.

Absolutely fantastic, and, also, brilliant marketing. She released her latest album 3 days ago... coinkidink? I think not.

Does not change the fact that this woman can write a fine song and has an awesome voice. This skit is brilliant because it's a way of reminding us how big her first album was, and how much those songs are just 'in there'... well, I was singing along with them all in the skit, I remember listening to the album while I did odd jobs for extra cash while I was at uni... so it takes me back to exact moments (I can remember one exact garden I was working on while listening to it for example)... great stuff.

From the moment she entered the bar, I had a wide smile across my face, I wish I had a video like this to start every day. That is going to be a story told many many times to friends and families.

<3 Jewel

"I don't wanna tell Jewel, but the girl that was singin' her song may have actually been slightly better..."
He's right! There is a noticeable difference in her when she's concentrating on her voice and when she's hiding behind her 'name'.

"... singing it. Everybody knew all the words. It was really sweet."

Uhm... not to be a negative Nelly, but the lyrics WERE projected on a screen for everyone.

Great video. Always loved Jewel. There's just something about girls on toilets, I guess.

Btw, I didn't think Karen was "homely" at all. WTF are these people talking about?

dannym3141says...

But yeah, who is jewel? If she started singing in a karaoke bar i'd think "hey that's really damn good", then she'd whip off the costume, come back in and i'd be like "hey, there's yet another good singer, she sounds like the first one, where the hell are all these brilliant singers with similar voices coming from?"

Then i'd think "wtf am i doing in a karaoke bar?" and leave. Probably step on somoene's foot on the way out and accidentally cause a fight that carries on behind me as i leave unharmed.

Deanosays...

I have heard of her but I'm not sure she's ever been so mega-successful that I could name one of her songs. I think I heard a poppy one a few years ago and felt it was so-so. Still, an enjoyable bit of marketing I guess.

I did karoake once in Cyprus. After 18 southern comfort and cokes. It was not pretty.

I have a friend who's a rising Opera star. She has a similar ability to completely spellbind people who don't even know her. At her mom's birthday party the whole restaurant was dead silent for a few minutes after she sang happy birthday.

w00t! Gas Lite! If you are in the Santa Monica area, it's a great little dive bar on Wilshire. Great place to get crazy drunk, belt out some tunes, and stumble home (or to Izzy's Deli) wasted!

volumptuoussays...

If 3 Grammy's and 27million albums sold isn't "mega-successful" then what is?

I can't name one of them either, but then again I'm the last person to ask about pop music.

Deanosays...

I suppose it comes down to your definition - I'd imagine that U2 have sold considerably more and are household names into the bargain. Also her sales breakdown suggests she's better known in the U.S. I don't think she'd be instantly recognised in the UK for instance.

She's pretty much household name status here in Australia... in case you care

TEETH!

Not the crowd I remember at the Gas Light. But, Santa Monica's GL aside, anywhere in this country I've been and watched karaoke (not that there have been many) they've been very interested in the voice over the look.

zorsays...

Wow! That's the best thing FOD has ever done. The look on the 4:03 girl's face almost brought tears to my eyes. For real, though, I hardly recognized Jewel in the beginning either since she had her snaggly teeth fixed. -edit, I guess i'm not the only one who noticed..lol
